There’s so much that I could talk and write about this week, but thinking about it all, it’s been a rather shit couple of weeks.
I wanted to write a speculative piece about the potential for the UK to re-introduce legislation towards ID cards, using the analogy that we give away so much of our data to private companies, but when it comes to our ‘essential’ information, like the NHS, Department for Work and Pensions (Including National Insurance, benefits and the like), passport information (Biometric data), and having something that we can use with our new ‘No ID, No Vote’ laws, there’s just a horrible mis-match of data. So many unique identifiers that could be simplified into one, and bring systems together for the greater good. Then Labour decided[i] they needed something to talk about that wasn’t about the budget in October, and would help them in their ‘stopping the boats’ and ‘illegal working’ argument[ii], via a digital ID scheme[iii], so that piece is having to be re-focused. Remember though, I said it first!
I wanted to write about the Domesday Clock, and how being 89 seconds to midnight should be worrying to everyone, and why we need to take a calmer approach to resolving world and regional issues. Then we had the whole ‘We recognise Palestine[iv]’, and ‘Trump’s ceasefire offer[v][vi]’, which is on its own clock. What I write now will age quicker than a banana in a humid room.
Then in the space of a week both a Mormon Church in America[vii][viii][ix] and a Synagogue in the UK[x][xi] were victims of terror attacks. There’s no other way I can say this other than killing people indiscriminately is horrific. To do so in a person’s place of worship is abhorrent. Yet, this has, and will be weaponised, just like that radio host, and every other time someone’s death can make the political narrative more explosive.
I wanted to write a retort to all those saying that Asylum Seekers in the UK are living in luxury, costing us too much money, and are the root of all evil. Yes, there have been some sickening cases of abuse both on the journey, and in hotels whilst awaiting verdicts on cases, but then you have articles discussing how families are using extension cords and portable electric cookers in hotel bathroom showers to cook food[xii], because the quality of food offered is akin to prison food. Then there was a story[xiii] about someone who committed suicide in a hotel, and though the comments section has now been taken down, was full of vitriol saying that ‘if they came legally’ there wouldn’t be a problem, not realising that it’s not exactly easy to just go to an airport, and buy a flight ticket along with a visa to come here ‘legally’.
If I were to write and comment about all of these, I’d not only be sobbing into my Macbook by the end of it, my head would be a mess. This isn’t a great time to be alive, it’s a fucking scary one. And between that, every social media app (Including Nextdoor and Bluesky, which are supposed to be above this) is drawing battlelines on everything, making me reminisce to the days where you could own a Korn / Slipknot hoodie, but not one by each band. Or when you had to choose between Edward and Jacob and so on. It’s just fucking horrible.
So, I will carry on writing up these pieces, but at a much slower and steadier pace over the next couple of weeks. I know for a fact that the week after next I’ll have a lot of free time in waiting rooms in hospital to deal with, and the best thing about hospitals in the UK is the fact that Wi-Fi is almost universally shit. I mean it. Pathetic. But on top of that, really, this weekend I just fancy watching Vandebilt try to beat ‘Bama for the second year in a row, do some book writing, and maybe turn off the wi-fi hub for a bit. Get away from it all, and think about the good in the world rather than the evil.
Oh, and to make things worse, the dog, Toby that I sponsored through the Dogs Trust has passed away. I hope you get to see Dipper and Ben up in the land of the ever-happy doggos.
I guess, above all, I just fancy a break from all the commotion and bullshit, which is ironic as I’ve barely left the flat this week. Social media and news can be all consuming… It’s so bad that I’ve just this second realised that I’ve missed the first episode of S70 of Have I Got News For You…. Is it OK to just leave a kettle and a bunch of teabags in your bedroom? I use bottled water anyway, so no need for a tap.
However you feel, whatever may be overwhelming you, remember to take a break, and just fucking breathe. You deserve some sanity and serenity in the chaos. We can’t really do much to change everything, no matter how much we want to, and the harder you push, the quicker you get burned out.
